ATHX-105

ATHX-105 is an investigational small molecule drug developed by Athersys for the treatment of obesity. It acts as a selective agonist of the serotonin 5HT2c receptor (5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2C), a validated molecular target in the brain that regulates appetite and food intake. By stimulating this receptor without activating the related 5HT2b receptor (which is associated with cardiovascular side effects), ATHX-105 was designed to suppress appetite and promote weight loss while minimizing adverse effects seen with other drugs in this class. The compound demonstrated good oral bioavailability and was being developed as a once-daily oral therapy. Clinical development reached Phase 2 trials for obesity but has since been discontinued[1][3][7].
