atipamezole

Atipamezole is a synthetic small molecule that acts as a potent, selective, and competitive antagonist of alpha2-adrenoceptors. It is primarily used in veterinary medicine to reverse the sedative and analgesic effects of alpha2-adrenoceptor agonists such as dexmedetomidine and medetomidine in dogs. Atipamezole works by competitively inhibiting alpha2-adrenoceptors, thereby rapidly reversing sedation, bradycardia, and other clinical effects induced by these agonists. The drug has a rapid onset of action (arousal within 5–10 minutes after intramuscular injection) and undergoes extensive hepatic metabolism with urinary excretion of metabolites.
