Atipamezole is a synthetic small molecule that acts as a potent, selective, and competitive antagonist of alpha2-adrenoceptors. It is primarily used in veterinary medicine to reverse the sedative and analgesic effects of alpha2-adrenoceptor agonists such as dexmedetomidine and medetomidine in dogs. Atipamezole works by competitively inhibiting alpha2-adrenoceptors, thereby rapidly reversing sedation, bradycardia, and other clinical effects induced by these agonists. The drug has a rapid onset of action (arousal within 5–10 minutes after intramuscular injection) and undergoes extensive hepatic metabolism with urinary excretion of metabolites. While its main use is in animals, atipamezole has also been investigated for potential human applications such as anti-Parkinsonian therapy[1][2][4][5][6].
