ATL-104 is a potent mitogen for epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract, classified as a peptide-based biologic. It has been investigated primarily for its ability to aid regeneration of the gastrointestinal mucosa following damage from chemotherapeutic agents. In clinical studies, ATL-104 was administered to patients undergoing high-dose chemotherapy and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) to reduce the incidence and duration of severe oral mucositis—a common complication in this setting. The drug acts by stimulating epithelial cell proliferation, thereby promoting mucosal healing. Its mechanism may involve activation of nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT), although this is not fully established[1][2][4]. ATL-104 offers potential advantages over existing treatments like palifermin due to its topical administration route, which limits systemic exposure and reduces adverse effects[4].
