ATORGOOD is a branded generic formulation of atorvastatin, a synthetic lipid-lowering agent. It belongs to the class of medications known as statins, which function as selective, competitive inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. This enzyme is responsible for the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, converting HMG-CoA to mevalonate. By inhibiting this pathway, ATORGOOD reduces hepatic cholesterol synthesis, which triggers an up-regulation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors on the surface of hepatocytes, leading to increased uptake and catabolism of circulating LDL cholesterol. Developed and distributed by GoodMed Healthcare, ATORGOOD is indicated for the management of hypercholesterolemia and the prevention of cardiovascular disease, including the reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke.
