Atorstat

Atorstat is a branded generic formulation of atorvastatin, a lipid-lowering agent belonging to the statin class. It is marketed by Innovis Pharma in Greece for the management of cardiovascular diseases, specifically hypercholesterolemia and the prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular events. Atorvastatin works by competitively inhibiting 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the hepatic biosynthetic pathway of cholesterol. This inhibition leads to an increase in LDL-receptor expression on hepatocyte membranes, resulting in enhanced uptake and catabolism of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from the circulation, thereby reducing plasma LDL-C, total cholesterol, and triglycerides while slightly increasing HDL-C.
