Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Atorvast-Natrapharm is a generic oral film-coated tablet formulation of atorvastatin calcium, a synthetic lipid-lowering agent. It functions as a selective, competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme responsible for converting HMG-CoA to mevalonate during cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver. By reducing hepatic cholesterol levels, the drug triggers an increase in LDL-receptor expression on hepatocyte membranes, which enhances the uptake and clearance of circulating LDL-cholesterol. Marketed by the Filipino company Natrapharm, it is indicated for the management of various lipid disorders, including primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and dysbetalipoproteinemia. The medication is manufactured by Apotex in Canada and packaged locally by Lloyd Laboratories.
