Atorvastatin is a small molecule drug in the class of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. It works by reversibly inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase—the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis—thereby reducing total cholesterol (especially LDL-C), apolipoprotein B (apo B), non-HDL-C and triglycerides while increasing HDL-C. Lowering these lipid levels reduces the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. Atorvastatin is indicated for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease including myocardial infarction and stroke; it is also used to treat various forms of hypercholesterolemia including familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia in children aged 10–17 years[1][2][5].
