Overview
The combination of atorvastatin and aspirin is primarily used for the prevention of heart attack and stroke. This combination therapy works through complementary mechanisms to reduce cardiovascular risk factors. ## Mechanism of Action Atorvastatin + aspirin combines two distinct medications with different mechanisms: 1. **Atorvastatin** is a lipid-lowering medication that blocks an enzyme required to make cholesterol in the body. It effectively reduces bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides while increasing good cholesterol (HDL). 2. **Aspirin** functions as a blood thinner (antiplatelet/anticoagulant) that prevents the formation of blood clots in blood vessels. Together, these medications work synergistically to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart-related chest pain (angina).
