atorvastatin + acetylcysteine

Atorvastatin + acetylcysteine is an investigational combination therapy being evaluated for the treatment of primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), particularly in patients who are steroid-resistant or have relapsed. The combination consists of atorvastatin, an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant and mucolytic agent. The therapeutic rationale is based on atorvastatin's ability to improve bone marrow endothelial cell function and NAC's role in inhibiting platelet binding to endothelial cells, collectively aiming to increase circulating platelet counts. This combination is currently being studied in exploratory clinical trials by the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara in Mexico.
