Atorvastatin + autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) is a combination therapy being evaluated in the TEAM-AMI Phase 2 clinical trial for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients with impaired left ventricular function. The therapy involves the administration of intensive-dose atorvastatin, a small molecule HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, alongside the intracoronary transplantation of autologous BMMSCs. Atorvastatin is utilized not only for its lipid-lowering capabilities but also for its pleiotropic effects, which include enhancing angiogenesis, reducing inflammation, and improving the survival and retention of the transplanted stem cells within the post-infarct cardiac microenvironment. This investigative approach is led by Dr. Yuejin Yang at Fuwai Hospital, National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, in Beijing, China.
