This combination therapy consists of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor atorvastatin and autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell (MNC) transplantation. It was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial led by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Fuwai Hospital, specifically for patients with anterior ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) and impaired left ventricular function. Atorvastatin, a small molecule statin, is administered at intensive doses to potentially enhance the therapeutic efficacy of the intracoronary-transferred MNCs. Beyond its primary role in cholesterol reduction, atorvastatin is studied in this context for its pleiotropic effects, which may improve stem cell survival, migration, and homing to the damaged cardiac tissue, thereby facilitating cardiac repair and regeneration following a myocardial infarction.
