The combination of atorvastatin and fish oils is being investigated by The University of Western Australia in a Phase 3 factorial study to evaluate its effects on lipoprotein kinetics and metabolism in men with visceral obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Atorvastatin is a well-established small molecule statin that acts as a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis, thereby reducing LDL cholesterol levels. Fish oils, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), primarily target hepatic triglyceride synthesis and promote fatty acid oxidation, often through the activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha). This therapeutic approach aims to address the complex dyslipidemia and metabolic disturbances associated with visceral obesity and metabolic syndrome.
