This combination therapy regimen, comprising atorvastatin, interferon beta, and erythropoietin (EPO), was investigated by Sun Yat-sen University for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO). Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor included for its potential immunomodulatory and neuroprotective effects. Interferon beta is a standard disease-modifying therapy for MS that modulates the immune response to reduce relapse frequency. Erythropoietin, a glycoprotein hormone traditionally used to treat anemia, is explored in this context for its neuroprotective, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory properties within the central nervous system. The triple combination aims to leverage synergistic mechanisms to improve clinical outcomes and stabilize disease progression in Chinese patient populations.
