Overview

Atorvastatin + n-acetylcysteine is a combination of two small molecule drugs, atorvastatin (a statin) and n-acetylcysteine (an antioxidant and mucolytic agent). This combination has been investigated primarily for its potential to prevent contrast-induced nephropathy in patients undergoing procedures such as percutaneous coronary intervention. Atorvastatin works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, leading to reduced cholesterol synthesis and pleiotropic effects including anti-inflammatory actions. N-acetylcysteine acts as an antioxidant by replenishing intracellular glutathione stores and directly scavenging free radicals. The combination has shown synergistic effects in reducing oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammation, and improving outcomes in models of kidney injury, immune thrombocytopenia resistant to steroids, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease[1][2][3][4][5].
