Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Atorvastatin 1.2% gel is a locally delivered pharmaceutical formulation developed by researchers at the Government Dental College and Research Institute in Bangalore, India. It is designed for subgingival administration as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in patients with chronic periodontitis, particularly those with mandibular degree II furcation defects. The formulation utilizes a methylcellulose vehicle to provide controlled release of atorvastatin directly into periodontal pockets. While atorvastatin is traditionally known as a systemic HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor for treating hypercholesterolemia, its local application in periodontal therapy leverages pleiotropic effects, including potent anti-inflammatory properties and the stimulation of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) expression, which promotes bone regeneration and defect fill.
