Atorvastatin 2% dentifrice is a topical formulation developed by the Universidad de los Andes in Chile for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. While atorvastatin is traditionally an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor used systemically for hypercholesterolemia, this medicated toothpaste leverages its pleiotropic effects, including anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and bone formation-stimulating properties. The drug is intended for topical application as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) to improve clinical periodontal parameters and promote bone regeneration in the periodontal tissues. A Phase 2 clinical trial demonstrated that the use of this 2% atorvastatin dentifrice significantly improved periodontal health compared to a placebo dentifrice.
