Overview
Atorvastatin Hennig is an oral generic medication containing atorvastatin hemicalcium, a member of the statin class of lipid-lowering agents. Developed and marketed by Hennig Arzneimittel, it acts as a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase), the rate-limiting enzyme in the mevalonate pathway of cholesterol biosynthesis. By reducing internal cholesterol production in the liver, the drug triggers a compensatory increase in the expression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors on the surface of hepatocytes, which enhances the clearance of LDL cholesterol from the circulation. It is approved for the management of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia, and for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and stroke.
