atosiban + nifedipine

A combination therapy using atosiban (an oxytocin receptor antagonist) and nifedipine (a calcium channel blocker) for the management of preterm labor. This dual tocolytic approach has been investigated for potentially improved efficacy compared to either drug used alone. Studies suggest it may show significantly better outcomes in delaying preterm birth, with one study showing that 86% of patients receiving the combination therapy continued their pregnancy for at least one week, compared to 56% in the atosiban-only group and 60% in the nifedipine-only group. The combination appears to have an acceptable safety profile, with studies finding no direct adverse effects on fetal heart rate, movement, or blood flow, and reassuring long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes for exposed children.
