Atozycel is a generic formulation of azacitidine, a pyrimidine nucleoside analog that functions as a hypomethylating agent. Developed and marketed by the Russian pharmaceutical company Pharm-Sintez, it is indicated for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Azacitidine acts by incorporating into DNA and RNA. In DNA, it acts as a potent inhibitor of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs), leading to DNA hypomethylation. This process can reactivate tumor suppressor genes that were silenced by hypermethylation, promoting cell differentiation and apoptosis. Additionally, azacitidine exerts direct cytotoxic effects on abnormal hematopoietic cells in the bone marrow by disrupting protein synthesis through its incorporation into RNA.
