Drug intelligence / Profile preview
ATRA liposomes are a formulation of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) encapsulated within a lipid bilayer (liposome), designed to improve the pharmacokinetic profile and therapeutic efficacy of ATRA. This delivery system enhances drug stability, prolongs plasma exposure, and reduces toxicity compared to oral or non-liposomal forms. Mechanistically, ATRA is a potent agonist of the retinoic acid receptor beta (RARβ2), promoting differentiation in malignant cells—most notably in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL)—and modulating immune responses by targeting myeloid-derived suppressor cells and enhancing CD8+ T cell activity. Liposomal encapsulation allows for improved tumor targeting and has shown promise in both hematologic malignancies like APL and solid tumors such as glioma and brain cancer[1][2][5][7].
