Atractylenolide III is a sesquiterpenoid lactone and one of the main bioactive constituents derived from plants such as Atractylodes macrocephala and Codonopsis pilosula, commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. It exhibits various biological activities, including anti-oxidant, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-bacterial, and neuroprotective effects. Mechanistically, it has been reported to activate the adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1)-mediated AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway, leading to improved lipid metabolism and reduced oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis. In cancer models, it inhibits Jak3/Stat3-dependent IDO expression, Stat3 nuclear translocation, and fibroblast growth factor receptors FGFR1, FGFR2, and FGFR4, thereby exhibiting immune modulatory and anti-neoplastic activities[1][3][5]. There are no records of commercial pharmaceutical products, and its use is currently confined to research and as a natural product in traditional medicines.
