Atractylodes refers to the root of several species in the genus *Atractylodes*, most notably *A. macrocephala* (Bai Zhu) and *A. lancea* (Cang Zhu), which are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The roots contain bioactive compounds such as atractylenolides I/II/III and polysaccharides that have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory and anticancer properties in preclinical studies[4][8]. In TCM practice it is considered a spleen tonic used to support digestive health—treating symptoms like indigestion, bloating and diarrhea—and to strengthen immune function[5][6][7]. Modern research suggests potential benefits for gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic syndrome (including obesity), cancer support (notably cachexia), osteoporosis and neuroprotection; however robust clinical evidence is lacking for most indications[1][5][8]. Mechanistically its main components modulate inflammatory mediators by inhibiting MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways as well as reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6[4]. It may also influence estrogen metabolism and cytochrome P450 enzymes involved in drug metabolism[1][3].
