Overview

Atractylodes japonica root is a botanical extract derived from the rhizome of *Atractylodes japonica Koidzumi*, a plant used in traditional East Asian medicine. It contains bioactive compounds such as atractylenolides (I and III), atractylone, and polyacetylene derivatives. The extract exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Its mechanism of action involves the suppression of inflammatory mediators, specifically by inhibiting the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). Historically, it has been used for digestive disorders, fluid retention, and respiratory conditions. While it was previously listed as an approved substance in some jurisdictions, it has since been withdrawn from those specific pharmaceutical registries and is currently found in dietary supplements and cosmetic products.
