Overview

Atractylodin is a naturally occurring small molecule and a major bioactive component of the rhizomes of Atractylodes lancea, a medicinal plant long used in East Asian herbal medicine for gastrointestinal disorders. It acts as an agonist of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR, also known as the ghrelin receptor), promoting gastric motility and gastric emptying via myosin light chain phosphorylation in gastric smooth muscle cells. Atractylodin also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting N-acylethanolamine-hydrolyzing acid amidase (NAAA), thereby elevating palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) levels and inhibiting microglial activation. Additionally, it has been shown to activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), contributing to anti-inflammatory effects in colitis models. The compound has demonstrated antiproliferative activity in certain cancer cell lines and is under investigation primarily as an active constituent in standardized extracts of Atractylodes lancea for the treatment of cholangiocarcinoma and functional gastrointestinal disorders[1][3][4][6][7][10][12].
