Overview

Efacurim is a branded generic formulation of atracurium besilate, an intermediate-duration, non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent (NMBA). Developed by Surge Laboratories, Efacurim is approved as an adjunct to general anesthesia to facilitate endotracheal intubation and to provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgical procedures or mechanical ventilation. It works by competitively binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) at the motor end-plate of the neuromuscular junction, thereby blocking the action of acetylcholine and preventing muscle depolarization. A key clinical advantage of atracurium besilate is its organ-independent elimination via Hofmann elimination and ester hydrolysis, making it particularly useful in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
