Atropine is a naturally occurring tropane alkaloid and antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) agent. It acts as a competitive antagonist of acetylcholine at muscarinic cholinergic receptors, thereby inhibiting parasympathetic nerve impulses. This leads to increased heart rate, reduced secretions (saliva, bronchial), relaxation of smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, mydriasis (pupil dilation), and cycloplegia (paralysis of accommodation). Clinically, atropine is used for the treatment of symptomatic bradycardia, organophosphate or carbamate poisoning (including nerve agents and insecticides), preoperative reduction of salivation/secretions, ophthalmic applications such as pupil dilation and amblyopia therapy, and as an adjunct in acute nonspecific diarrhea when combined with other agents[1][2][5][9].
