Atropine methylbromide is a quaternary ammonium salt derivative of atropine, classified as a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist. It acts by competitively inhibiting the action of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors, thereby blocking parasympathetic nervous system activity. Due to its high polarity and inability to cross the blood-brain barrier, it primarily exerts peripheral effects with minimal central nervous system penetration. Clinically, it has been used as a mydriatic agent for pupil dilation during ophthalmic examinations and for relieving pyloric spasm in infants. Its peripheral antimuscarinic actions also make it useful in targeting smooth muscle and glandular tissues innervated by postganglionic cholinergic nerves[1][4][7].
