Overview
Attapulgite is a naturally occurring magnesium aluminium phyllosilicate clay used as an oral antidiarrheal agent. It acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract by adsorbing (binding) water and various substances such as acids and toxins. This reduces stool liquidity and frequency by increasing stool consistency and forming a protective coating on the intestinal lining. Attapulgite is not systemically absorbed or metabolized; it passes through the GI tract unchanged. Historically used in both human and veterinary medicine for symptomatic treatment of acute non-infectious diarrhea; it was formerly an active ingredient in products like Kaopectate before reformulation with bismuth subsalicylate[1][4][6].
