The attenuated measles vaccine is a live-attenuated viral vaccine developed to prevent infection by the measles virus. It contains a weakened (attenuated) form of the wild-type measles virus that can replicate in the body without causing disease in immunocompetent individuals. Upon administration—typically as part of combination vaccines such as MMR (measles-mumps-rubella)—the immune system mounts a response against the virus, resulting in long-lasting immunity. The mechanism of action involves stimulating both humoral and cellular immune responses against the viral antigens. The most widely used strains for attenuation include Schwarz/Moraten and AIK-C. The primary indication is prevention of measles infection; it is highly effective with two doses conferring about 97% protection and often lifelong immunity[1][2][3]. It should not be administered to immunocompromised individuals or pregnant women due to risk from even weakened viruses[2][4].
