The attenuated mumps vaccine is a live vaccine containing weakened (attenuated) forms of the mumps virus. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies and cellular immunity against the mumps virus without causing the full-blown disease, thereby providing long-term protection against mumps. The vaccine is primarily indicated for the prevention of mumps, a contagious viral infection that can cause fever, swelling of the parotid glands, and potential complications such as meningitis or orchitis. Historically, Maurice Hilleman of Merck & Co. developed the widely used Jeryl Lynn strain. While monovalent mumps vaccines like Mumpsvax were once available, the attenuated mumps vaccine is now most commonly administered as a component of combination vaccines, such as the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine or the measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (MMRV) vaccine.
