The attenuated MVA monkeypox vaccine is a live-attenuated viral vaccine based on the Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) strain, developed by the Shanghai Institute of Biological Products (SIBP), a subsidiary of Sinopharm (China National Biotec Group). MVA is a highly attenuated, non-replicating or poorly replicating orthopoxvirus that has been extensively used as a safe vaccine vector. This specific candidate is designed to prevent monkeypox (mpox) infection by inducing active immunity against the monkeypox virus. In clinical evaluation, it is administered via a two-dose subcutaneous schedule, with doses given 28 days apart. The vaccine is currently undergoing Phase I clinical trials in China to assess its safety and immunogenicity in adults.
