Overview

Attenuated Salmonella secreting IFN-β is an engineered microbial therapy developed by researchers at Chungnam National University. The platform utilizes an attenuated *Salmonella Typhimurium* strain (BRD509 background with an rcsB gene deletion) designed to selectively colonize and proliferate within tumor tissues. It is engineered to secrete interferon-beta (IFN-β) through the flagellar type III secretion system (FT3SS), with secretion controlled by L-arabinose induction. This localized delivery of IFN-β modulates the tumor microenvironment, promotes N1-type neutrophil infiltration, and activates antitumor immune responses. Preclinical studies in colorectal cancer models have demonstrated that the therapy inhibits tumor growth and induces apoptosis, showing significant synergistic effects when combined with PD-L1 checkpoint blockade.
