Overview

Atuna racemosa is a fruit-bearing tree in the Chrysobalanaceae family, native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Traditionally used in regions such as Indonesia and Samoa for culinary purposes and as a remedy for inflammation, fever, diarrhea, hypertension, and severe abdominal pain[2][8][9]. Extracts from various parts of the plant (kernel/nut, bark, leaves) have demonstrated antibacterial activity—particularly against antibiotic-resistant bacteria like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)—as well as antioxidant properties[2][4][5][8]. Key active compounds include 4’-O-methyl-ent-gallocatechin and (+)-gallocatechin; catechins such as epigallocatechin gallate may inhibit bacterial biofilm formation by targeting penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a)[5]. Phytochemical screening reveals the presence of flavonoids, saponins, tannins (noted for antimicrobial/antioxidant effects), alkaloids, and steroids[6][8]. Toxicity studies indicate some cytotoxic potential but also suggest that hepatocytes can detoxify extracts in vitro; traditional use reports little indication of toxicity[3][7]. The plant is under investigation as a novel source of antibacterial/antibiofilm agents.
