Overview

ATX304 (also known as O304) is a first-in-class, orally available small molecule pan-activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) developed by Betagenon AB. As a master regulator of cellular energy homeostasis, AMPK activation by ATX304 mimics the physiological effects of exercise and caloric restriction. The drug works by increasing glucose uptake in skeletal muscle, enhancing fatty acid oxidation, and improving microvascular blood flow. These mechanisms contribute to its therapeutic potential in treating obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions such as heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). By shifting the metabolic balance toward energy expenditure and improving insulin sensitivity, ATX304 aims to reduce adiposity and improve glycemic control in patients with metabolic syndrome.
