Atzirut X

Atzirut X is a botanical stimulant laxative product developed and marketed by the Israeli pharmaceutical company CTS. It is indicated for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. The formulation is a combination of two plant extracts: Senna (*Cassia angustifolia*) and Buckthorn (*Rhamnus frangula*). These extracts contain anthraquinone glycosides, such as sennosides and glucofrangulins, which act as prodrugs. Upon reaching the colon, they are hydrolyzed by bacterial enzymes into active metabolites like rheinanthrone. These metabolites stimulate the myenteric plexus (Auerbach's plexus) to increase intestinal peristalsis and inhibit the Na+/K+-ATPase pump in the intestinal wall, which reduces water and electrolyte absorption and promotes fluid secretion into the lumen. The combined effect softens the stool and facilitates bowel evacuation. Atzirut X is registered as an over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical drug in Israel.
