Auger Molecular Therapy (AMT) is an investigational combination therapy developed by NanoRay Biotech for the palliative treatment of malignant cutaneous lesions, specifically malignant fungating wounds. The therapy consists of two primary components: the drug iododeoxyuridine (IUdR) and the AUTRON Therapy System medical device. IUdR is an iodinated thymidine analogue that selectively incorporates into the DNA of rapidly proliferating cancer cells. The AUTRON system then delivers low-energy characteristic X-ray photons (approximately 33.4 keV) to the tumor site. This specific energy level matches the K-edge energy of iodine, triggering a photoelectric effect that induces the emission of high-LET Auger electrons directly within the cancer cell DNA. Because these electrons have an extremely short biological range (nanometer scale), they cause localized, lethal double-strand DNA breaks while minimizing radiation damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
