Augpen

Augpen is an antibacterial combination product developed and marketed by Zuventus Healthcare, consisting of the beta-lactam antibiotic amoxicillin and the beta-lactamase inhibitor clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential enzymes in the bacterial peptidoglycan biosynthetic pathway, leading to the inhibition of cell wall synthesis and subsequent bacterial lysis. Clavulanate potassium acts as a 'suicide' inhibitor of beta-lactamase enzymes, which are produced by certain bacteria to degrade penicillin-like drugs. By neutralizing these enzymes, clavulanate protects amoxicillin from degradation and extends its efficacy against beta-lactamase-producing strains. Augpen is available in various oral and intravenous formulations and is indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract, genito-urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, bone and joint, and dental infections.
