Aureobasidium pullulans var. pullutans

Aureobasidium pullulans is a ubiquitous, black, yeast-like fungus. [5] It is not a therapeutic drug but has several medically-related applications. Primarily, it is classified as a Non-Standardized Fungal Allergenic Extract used for diagnostic purposes in allergy testing. [7] In this context, the extract is used to provoke an immune response in individuals to test for allergies to the mold. [7] The fungus itself can be an opportunistic pathogen, causing a range of infections in humans, and exposure can also lead to hypersensitivity pneumonitis. [1, 5, 15] Additionally, A. pullulans is a source of various bioactive compounds. It is fermented to produce beta-glucans, which are sold as dietary supplements for their purported immunomodulatory activities, such as enhancing immune function and supporting intestinal health. [3, 6, 14] The fungus is also used for the industrial production of pullulan, a biodegradable polysaccharide with applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. [13, 20]
