Aurintricarboxylic acid is a synthetic aromatic carboxylic acid known for its potent inhibition of protein-nucleic acid interactions, notably inhibiting ribonuclease and topoisomerase II by blocking nucleic acid binding. It acts as a stable polymeric free radical in aqueous solution, inhibits translation initiation, and is widely used as a research tool to suppress apoptosis and protein biosynthesis in biological systems. Aurintricarboxylic acid has antiviral activity in vitro against viruses including influenza A, HIV, SARS, MERS, SARS-CoV-2, and demonstrates activity against drug-resistant cancer cells by inhibiting translation initiation and cell proliferation. Its ammonium salt is used in chemical assays as the reagent aluminon for aluminum quantitation. Despite broad research applications, it is not approved or used clinically as a pharmaceutical agent.[1][2][3][5][7]
