Overview

AuroLase is a nanoparticle-directed photothermal ablation therapy developed by Nanospectra Biosciences. The therapy utilizes AuroShell particles, which are approximately 150 nm in diameter and consist of a dielectric silica core surrounded by a thin gold shell. These nanoparticles are administered intravenously and selectively accumulate in tumor tissue through the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect facilitated by leaky tumor vasculature. Following accumulation, the tumor site is illuminated with a near-infrared (NIR) laser. The gold nanoshells absorb the NIR light and convert it into thermal energy, causing localized hyperthermia and focal destruction of the tumor tissue while sparing adjacent healthy structures. AuroLase is primarily being developed for the treatment of localized, low- to intermediate-risk prostate cancer and has also been investigated for head and neck cancers.
