Ausanil is a non-prescription, homeopathic nasal spray formulated to provide rapid pain relief for severe headaches—including tension, rebound, cluster headaches—and migraines. Its primary active ingredient is an extract from the oleoresin capsicum plant (chili pepper), specifically capsaicin. The mechanism of action involves local desensitization of the trigeminal nerve in the nasal mucosa and depletion of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a key neurotransmitter involved in migraine pain signaling. This leads to reduced swelling and inflammation of blood vessels around the brain, resulting in fast-acting pain relief. Ausanil is not intended as a preventative or cure but as symptomatic treatment for acute headache episodes. It was developed by neurologist Dr. Anjan Chatterjee and commercialized by VR1 Corp., with its first launch in 2014[1][2][3][4][5]. Clinical studies have shown effectiveness rates comparable to prescription migraine medications but with minimal systemic side effects due to its localized intranasal delivery[2][3]. It is not recommended for mild or infrequent headaches, certain types of migraines (e.g., basilar), children under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or those with specific nasal/respiratory conditions[2][4].
