AUSZACT

AUSZACT is a branded generic formulation of azithromycin, a second-generation macrolide antibiotic within the azalide subclass, marketed by Austex Pharmaceuticals. Azithromycin is characterized by its expanded spectrum of activity compared to erythromycin, particularly against Gram-negative pathogens like *Haemophilus influenzae*, and its superior pharmacokinetic profile, including high intracellular penetration and an exceptionally long terminal half-life. Its mechanism of action involves reversible binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, specifically at the 23S rRNA, which inhibits RNA-dependent protein synthesis by blocking the translocation of the peptidyl-tRNA from the A-site to the P-site. This results in bacteriostatic activity, although it can be bactericidal against certain species such as *Streptococcus pyogenes*.
