This investigational autologous stem cell therapy is being developed by Ain Shams University for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus. The procedure involves harvesting mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from a patient's own adipose tissue via liposuction, followed by in vitro characterization and differentiation into glucose-sensitive, insulin-producing cells. These differentiated cells are then transplanted back into the patient through either portal or peripheral circulation. The therapy aims to restore endogenous insulin production and supplement the function of pancreatic beta cells that have been destroyed by autoimmune activity, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for exogenous insulin injections.
