Overview

This is an investigational autologous cell therapy developed by the Mayo Clinic, consisting of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from a patient's own adipose tissue. The therapy is specifically designed to treat atherosclerotic renovascular disease (ARVD), renovascular hypertension, and associated chronic kidney disease. The treatment involves harvesting MSCs via a fat biopsy, expanding them in vitro, and delivering them through an intra-arterial infusion directly into the renal artery of the affected kidney. The MSCs are thought to exert therapeutic effects through paracrine mechanisms, releasing soluble mediators and extracellular vesicles that promote angiogenesis, reduce inflammation, and facilitate tissue repair. Clinical Phase 1 trials have demonstrated that this infusion can increase renal blood flow, improve glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and decrease inflammatory biomarkers in the stenotic kidney.
