Overview

Autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell-based biologic therapy developed by the Mayo Clinic for the treatment of progressive diabetic kidney disease (DKD). The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own adipose tissue, typically from the periumbilical abdomen, from which MSCs are isolated, expanded in vitro, and cryopreserved. These cells are then delivered intra-arterially via the renal artery. The therapeutic mechanism is based on the cells' ability to perform immunomodulation and exert anti-inflammatory effects through paracrine signaling. This activity is intended to rejuvenate vascular integrity and promote angiogenic repair within the kidney, potentially slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.
