Autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (adMSCs) are an experimental cell therapy being investigated by Dr. Paul E. Schulz at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for the treatment of early-stage Alzheimer's disease. The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own fat tissue via biopsy, isolating and expanding the mesenchymal stem cells, and re-administering them through intravenous infusion. The mechanism of action is centered on the immunomodulatory and neuroprotective properties of MSCs; they are intended to migrate to the brain and secrete paracrine factors that reduce neuroinflammation, modulate microglial activity, and potentially stimulate endogenous repair mechanisms. This approach aims to slow the progression of cognitive decline in patients with late pre-symptomatic or prodromal Alzheimer's disease by addressing the inflammatory component of the pathology.
