Autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a type of cell therapy being investigated by Regeneris Medical for the treatment of respiratory compromise associated with COVID-19, including severe pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). These cells are harvested from the patient's own adipose (fat) tissue, processed, and then administered intravenously. The therapeutic rationale is based on the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of MSCs, which are thought to mitigate the cytokine storm—an overactive immune response characterized by the systemic release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. By reducing lung inflammation and promoting tissue repair, these cells aim to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the need for intensive respiratory support in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
