Overview

Autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by Universitas Indonesia for the treatment of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). The therapy involves harvesting subcutaneous adipose tissue from the patient via biopsy, followed by the isolation and expansion of mesenchymal stem cells in a cGMP-compliant laboratory. The expanded cells are then administered intrathecally. The therapeutic rationale is based on the ability of MSCs to migrate to neurodegenerative lesion areas and provide neuroprotective support through the secretion of neurotrophic factors (such as IGF-1 and BDNF), promote tissue regeneration, and exert immunomodulatory effects to reduce neuroinflammation, with the ultimate goal of slowing or halting the clinical progression of MSA.
