This experimental autologous cell therapy is being developed by the Mossakowski Medical Research Centre, Polish Academy of Sciences, for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The therapy utilizes autologous adipose-derived regenerative cells (ADRCs), which are a heterogeneous population of cells, including mesenchymal stem cells, freshly isolated from the patient's own adipose tissue via liposuction and enzymatic digestion. Unlike many other stem cell therapies, these cells are not expanded in vitro, aiming to preserve their natural immunomodulatory and neuroprotective properties. The treatment protocol in the ADIPOSTEM clinical trial involves a primary intraspinal transplantation followed by two subsequent intrathecal infusions. The therapeutic effect is hypothesized to be mediated through the secretion of various growth factors and immunomodulatory cytokines that support motor neuron survival and reduce neuroinflammation.
