Overview

Autologous adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is an investigational cell therapy being developed by the Instituto de Investigación Hospital Universitario La Paz. It consists of a heterogeneous population of cells, including mesenchymal stem cells, endothelial progenitor cells, and immune cells, extracted from a patient's own adipose tissue via lipoaspiration. Unlike expanded adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs), SVF is processed and administered without cell culture expansion, typically through enzymatic digestion or mechanical dissociation. The therapy is administered via intralesional injection into the walls of rectovaginal fistulas, particularly in patients with Crohn's disease. The mechanism of action involves the local delivery of regenerative cells that promote angiogenesis, modulate the local immune response, and facilitate tissue repair to achieve fistula closure.
